The Culture of Thinness

“The state or quality of having little, or too little, flesh or fat on the body. “The pitiful thinness of his/her body"

I’ve been thinking for some time about this idea of thinness, and how it’s something so many people aspire to, and how as a society it’s something that has value - particularly but definitely not exclusively, if you’re a woman.

I’ve recently been watching the TV and seen images of superstars like Victoria Beckham and others who are stick thin - like the figures of Alberto Giacometti, Swiss sculptor and painter. We seem to be going through another phase of downsizing (do you remember heroin chic?I think it was the 90’s). It’s chic to be too thin. With the advent of dieting drugs and cosmetic surgery, it seems as if it’s something, especially young people, feel they can achieve.

I read this in a paper the other day: “Body positivity is a nice idea. But no one actually believes it.”

So, I shall be working through some new work based on this. When I read and/or think about things, I usually see pictures, and I’ve already mapped out a couple of quilts! Isn’t it a shame that so many people don’t have self love and confidence about their bodies. Even albeit on a small scale, I used to look for clothes that hide my body or make me look thinner. I say used to, I don’t anymore and have joined the group that feels more confident …age, illness, love of colour, lack of caring, whatever, has given me the edge!!

So lots going on in my world at the moment. I do hope you will be able to make it to the exhibition that starts of 31st Jan until 11th May at Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum. I shall be at the gallery at various times, including 1st Feb when, with other artists, we'll be doing a Meet The Artist day and you can come along, chat, ask questions, etc.
